Human-Computer Interaction

Augmented Reality Campus Navigator

Assignment

The project consists of the design, development and evaluation of a mobile application that allows for the location-based visualization of spatial data using Augmented Reality.

OpenStreetMap and other Geo Information Systems provide spatial data containing information about points of interest (POIs), buildings, roads, bus stops etc. These data can be integrated into a mobile setting depending on the position of the user’s mobile device. Location-based applications must provide some mechanism to allow the user to report their location. On mobile devices, this is done through some kind of localization technology, for example by using satellite positioning through GPS.

The application to be developed should allow for usage of mapping data from the OpenStreetMap project. In addition to buildings, streets and terrain information, the visualization should contain additional points of interest (POI), that allow the user to explore certain objects in his vircinity, such as building entrances, artwork or cultural heritage objects.

It should be possible to annotate these objects with additional multimedial data, such as images, movies, text or websites (e.g. Wikipedia articles). These annotations should also be explorable on the mobile device based on the physical location of the user.

For AR integration, ready-to-use libraries such as Wikitude can be used.
