About me

Smi Hinterreiter is an external PhD candidate supervised by Prof. Dr. Marc Erich Latoschik, focusing on the automatic detection and indication of media bias in online news. Their work spans computer science, psychology, HCI, design, gamification, data science, and political science. Smi developed new methods for crowdsourcing bias labels through an educational game and a bias-indicating news aggregator. They study how to effectively indicate bias to news readers and explore lasting learning effects, aiming to increase media literacy and improve bias education. With a B.A. in Interactive Media Design from Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences and an M.A. in Interaction Design from Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, Smi naturally approaches research through interdisciplinary lenses. Part of their research was conducted at the National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Tokyo, and their work is funded by the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung.
